Iron nest: heavy turret simulator builds guide
Build basics

A build in IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is not a skill tree or a loadout screen. It is the workflow you bring to the gun: how you take map measurements from the received coordinates, how hard you strain the hydraulics, and how many ranging shots you spend before committing to a full fire mission.
"Take map measurements based on the received coordinates, strain the hydraulics, and gunlay the cannons."
Every build comes down to three choices:
- Measurement discipline: how carefully you read the map before the first shot. A slow, careful build lands hits early but takes more time per mission.
- Hydraulic pacing: how aggressively you push the turret. Hard strains speed up gunlaying but make fine corrections harder to control.
- Fire rhythm: whether you fire on the first computed solution or hold for a second confirmation shot.
Because the game is single-player with 33 achievements, including medal rewards for every main mission, your build should target a specific achievement or medal pace. The Calibration Fire and Fire and Light missions are the best early test beds for any build.
Early-game builds
The calibration-first build is the safest start. It works well in the opening missions because the targets are usually static and the coordinates are reliable. You spend the first shells confirming your map measurements, then switch to full effect.
- Take map measurements from the received coordinates before touching the hydraulics.
- Fire one calibration round and mark the fall of shot.
- Adjust the gunlaying using the offset, keeping the hydraulics steady.
- Commit to a full volley only when the correction is confirmed.
This build directly supports the Just Calibrating achievement, which requires you to land the calibration fire, plus the gold medal runs for Calibration Fire and Fire and Light that unlock Duty Fulfilled and Marksman's Honour.
Strengths and weaknesses:
- Strengths: reliable first hits, very little wasted ammunition, and clean habits for later missions.
- Weaknesses: slow to respond if the enemy starts a counter-battery exchange, since you spend time measuring instead of replying.
Mid-game options
By the time you reach missions like Counter-Battery,Iron Road, and Siege of Cartagena, you need to match your build to the threat.
The counter-battery build prioritizes speed. The goal is to read the incoming fire, estimate the enemy battery position from the impact pattern, and get a reply downrange before the enemy reloads. This is the build for the First Reply achievement, which asks you to silence the counter-battery. It trades measurement precision for aggression.
The dead reckoning build is the opposite. For missions like Dead Reckoning and Blind Fire, you trust the math from your map measurements and skip ranging shots entirely. This risks wasted shells and clean misses, but it pays off when the mission demands a fast, decisive bombardment. The Steady Hands and Nothing Was Thereachievements reward this approach.
How to pick a mid-game build:
- Choose speed builds for missions with active enemy artillery, such as Counter-Battery and Fire on Call.
- Choose calibration builds for fixed lines of advance like Iron Road, where targets appear at predictable intervals.
- Choose a mixed build: fast measurement, one ranging shot, then full effect for Phantom Battery and Final Harvest, where hidden targets punish slow setups.
Tips
These tips apply to every build in the guide. They come from the way the core loop works in IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator.
- Always finish your map measurements before you start straining the hydraulics. Correcting a bad gunlay at full hydraulic pressure wastes more time than measuring twice.
- Use the calibration fire as a pace setter. If you are chasing gold medals, one controlled ranging shot beats three rushed corrections.
- When a mission stalls, change your build philosophy. If a slow calibration build keeps getting interrupted, switch to dead reckoning and fire on the first solution.Pacing, not firepower, is usually the problem.
- The game supports full controller support, so if precise analog adjustments suit your aim better than quick mouse snaps, build around slower, steadier hydraulic control.
Keep an eye on the achievement list when building. The gold medal requirements for High Tide,The Gorge, and Rock of Gibraltar push you toward different pacing, so treat each mission as a separate build test instead of forcing one style through the whole campaign.
